Should LGBTI refugees have to 'prove' sexuality to authorities?
An often overlooked factor forcing many refugees to seek asylum is persecution based on gender identity and/or sexual orientation.
A staggering 175 million LGBTQIA people were forced to flee their countries of origin in 2012 alone - however only 2,500 were granted asylum here in Australia.
According to Kaleidoscope Australia, a significant number of LGBTQIA refugees are denied asylum due to not being able too 'prove' their sexuality to authorities. But how is it possible for someone to do this?
Sydney Educational Radio speaks to Jasmine Dawson, Chair of refugee LBGTQIA Committee of Kaleidoscope Australia.
